West Fork man killed in accident on Highway 64

A 78-year-old West Fork man died Thursday morning after pulling out in front of a dump truck on U.S. Highway 64, according to information obtained from law enforcement officials.

Police identified the victim as 78-year-old Delmar Ferrell, a former coach, teacher, school administrator and one time chaplain for the Washinton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the preliminary fatality summary, Ferrell was attempting to cross the highway in the area of Cherry Street and Bell Avenue just after 10 a.m. when the pick-up truck he was driving was hit by a dump truck driven by a 75-year-old Spiro man.

Ferrell was later pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith and his passenger and wife, was airlifted to UAMS in Little Rock fr treatment of her injuries.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the dump truck at this time.
