FORT SMITH - Many schools across the nation including a few in the River Valley have been terrorized by a social media threat aimed at a high school with the initials “SHS”. The Fort Smith Police Department says like many other law enforcement agencies, they got the calls and sprung into action.
“FSPD detectives quickly and thoroughly investigated this threat and have determined this post to be FALSE. The post in question originated from Springfield, Ohio.” the Department said Thursday morning. “Fort Smith Schools confirm there is no Ray Anders listed as a student. Fort Smith Police investigators contacted law enforcement agencies in Ohio and confirmed this fact.”
Investigators say they aren’t sitting by idly, despite the apparent all-clear.
“Nevertheless, Fort Smith Police and Fort Smith Public Schools are taking steps to ensure the safety of students through an increased presence of officers this morning.” the Department noted. “Thank you for your diligence in reporting this to the police quickly.”
Officials with the Sallisaw Public Schools say that like Southside, they are aware of the threat and have taken steps to enhance school safety today.
“To our knowledge, Sallisaw was never specifically referenced in the post. Nonetheless, every threat is serious and will be treated as such. We have requested and have been granted additional security to ensure the safety of our children.” the District said in a release. “Our children are our most precious possession, and their safety will not be compromised or placed in question. If you have any questions or concerns about the situation, please don’t hesitate to call. 918-775-5544 (Administration Building) or 918-775-7761 (High School).”
