FORT SMITH - The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office says that unscrupulous people are at it again, working the phone lines to scam hard working area residents out of their money.
“The sheriff’s department has recently investigated phone scams in which a caller impersonates a deputy by the name of Deputy Mike Harden calling from 479-755-9218. The caller tells potential victims they have an outstanding warrant for an unpaid debt, missed jury duty or some minor infraction and that a fine is due.” the Department said in a release. “The caller tries to convince people to make the payments by buying a prepaid credit card like Green Dot and registering it online.”
The Sheriff’s Department notes that they do not typically make phone calls about such matters.
“The sheriff’s department will not notify people about arrest warrants by phone, and we don’t accept money to clear them.” the release stated. “Should you receive a call from any law enforcement officer asking for money on a warrant, please call your local law enforcement agency or the sheriff’s department at 479-783-1051.”
