FORT SMITH - A trio of local firefighters are getting high honor for their bravery in a fire call earlier this month.

“The Fire Chief of the Fort Smith Fire Department takes pleasure in presenting the Fort Smith Fire Department Medal of Valor to Captain Jesse Chandler, Firefighter Heath Philpot and Firefighter Avery Short. They distinguished themselves through heroism and gallantry while conducting rescue operations.” the Department said. “On February 11, 2018, though confronted with overwhelming danger, Captain Chandler, Firefighter Philpot, and Firefighter Short selflessly entered a burning structure to rescue a trapped woman.”

The Department explained the significance of the firefighters’ actions.

“Through their quick actions and courageousness, they were responsible for the rescue of the woman. They have inspired their fellow Firefighters through their heroic and selfless act and is fully deserving of the Medal of Valor for their gallantry.” the Department continued. “Their bravery and professionalism is in keeping with the highest traditions of the fire service and reflects great credit upon themselves and the Fort Smith Fire Department.”

The fire happened February 11th at the Relax Inn on Towson Avenue.
