BENTON – The Helena-West Helena Cougar football team is ending their run in the state football playoffs after an accident involving three of their school buses on Friday injured a number of their players.
The wreck happened near the 116 mile marker outside of Benton, as they were en route to Arkadelphia. According to the Arkansas Activities Association, passengers included the football team, band members, and cheerleaders.
Originally, Benton School District Transportation Director Danny Revis had made arrangements to pick up the students and transport them on to Arkadelphia. Then, the game was postponed.
Now, after the traumatic experience, the East Arkansas school district has decided to go ahead and forfeit the game, and allow Arkadelphia to advance to the next round.
“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the injured students and their families.” Officials with the AAA said in a statement.
Arkadelphia will play at Southside Batesville next Friday night.
