Body Found Near Midland Bridge Identified

The body of a 46-year old homeless man thought to be from the Danville area was found near the Midland Avenue bridge on Tuesday according to law enforcement officials.

The body of Matthew Wood was found on the river bank by an employee of Arkola Sand and Gravel, according to the police report. Wood’s body was discovered on the Fort Smith side of the Arkansas River.

Officials said Wood was thought to have been living out of his car and had not been reported missing to any law enforcement officials.

The Fort Smith police took over the death investigation after the Van Buren police department handled the investigation. While foul play is not suspected, the body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime lab as a matter of routine procedure.
