OKLAHOMA CITY – If you don’t have insurance on your car, you could soon be fined in Oklahoma – without even getting pulled over.
The Tulsa World reports this week that the state of Oklahoma is in final discussions with a New England based company called Gatso Incorporated. The company, which has made red light cameras for years, has developed a license plate scanner that will take a picture of your car’s plate, then in seconds compare your tag number against a database of insured drivers. If you don’t have coverage, you’ll be sent a $184 citation.
For their troubles, Gatso Incorporated will receive $80 of the fine that you pay. Early projections are that the company could make up to $1,600,000 per month off the deal.
The initiative is expected to roll out first in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas.
