FORT SMITH - The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department says scammers are impersonating a deputy in trying to get money from unsuspecting residents of the area. A warning was sent out this week via the department’s social media that they receiving calls from citizens that someone who claims to be a deputy from the Sheriff’s Office is trying to collect payments for fines. If the citizen doesn’t agree to pay, the scammer is threatening to have a warrant sent for their arrest.

“The most recent phone scam is someone posing as a Deputy Davis and calling from 479-689-7664. However, multiple names, ranks and numbers may be used to trick citizens into sending money.” the Department said. “Sheriff’s office investigators have called this number and have received a voicemail that mimics the same message we have on our office telephone number, even stating to call 9-1-1 if it is an emergency. THIS IS A TRICK!!!”

The sheriff’s office reiterates that they will never ask people for money over the phone. If you have a question about a fine or a call you have received, please call us at 479-783-1051.
