A McCurtain County man died in an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Wednesday afternoon.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations is is looking into the shooting of a knife-wielding man by a McCurtain County deputy at a home in Millerton, according to a press release.
Millerton is located approximatey 140 miles south of Fort Smith and 10 miles west of Idabel.
The McCurtain County sheriff’s deputy and a Valliant police officer were responding to a domestic altercation call in the 300 block of Chickasaw Road in Millerton when the shooting occurred.
They arrived to find a man who had forced his way into the home. The shooting victim, identified as 37-year-old Daniel Francisco Valenzuela, ignored their commands to drop a knife he was holding, threatening officers as he came toward them, and was shot.
Valenzuela was taken to McCurtain Memorial Hospital, where he died from his wounds.
Both of the responding officers apparently fired shots during the incident.
The McCurtain County District Attorney’s Office has asked OSBI special agents to investigate the incident per standard procedure.
