Logan County Sheriff Boyd Dan Hicks announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday that he will not be seeking reelection to his post and will step down when his current term expires in 2018.
The entire text of his announcement is as follows:
TO THE CITIZENS OF LOGAN COUNTY:
It is with great difficulty that I must tell you that I have decided that this will be my last term as your Logan County Sheriff.
Not many of you know that I suffered a heart attack since beginning this journey which resulted in stents being put in on two different occasions. With the exception of a few days in the hospital, I have not slowed down or publicized it.
In fact, for the first three months on the job I didn’t take a single day off. I felt like it had to be done. For the past three years I have been routinely warned by my cardiologist (and my wife) to slow down and do whatever I need to do to reduce stress.
I will have to admit, I am not too good at doing that. I’ve always been what’s termed a workaholic I guess and I never wanted to let anyone down who needed my help. I will continue to do that until my term ends on December 31st, 2018.
And now, added to my health issues, my wife of 41 years has been diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disorder. She has supported my work in Law Enforcement for many years, she has sacrificed so much for so long and now I feel as though I need to support her. I hope you understand.
I sincerely appreciate the continual feedback from all of you regarding your gratitude for the job we have been doing and we will continue to strive to elevate the level of service provided by the Sheriff’s Office to the Citizens of Logan County.
I have worked diligently to hire hard working, dedicated staff and Deputies who truly care about providing the best service possible to our Citizens.
We have recovered many stolen items and sent those responsible for stealing those items to prison in many cases. We have increased the pressure on drug dealers, thieves and child molesters and will continue to seek to bring them to justice at every opportunity.
I believe I have kept the promises I made to the Citizens of Logan County and have sought to keep you updated, informed and alerted to potential risks to your safety and security.
I have made myself available to the public and always returned calls, text messages and Facebook messages in a timely manner. I will continue to do so.
I sincerely appreciate the response we have gotten from the Citizens of Logan County when we’ve sought information and the trust you have put in us as you’ve shared that information. We can’t do it alone.
It takes us all, working together, to make a difference. I believe that we continue to get the information we need only because you know that we will always respond and act on that information as quickly as possible and keep our sources completely confidential.
We have to have that trust to continue working together to solve crime and make Logan County a safer place to raise our children!
I will tell you that I do have someone who has worked with me as my Deputy that I believe will announce very soon his intentions to seek this very important position and become our next Logan County Sheriff.
He is uniquely qualified and I believe will keep the Sheriff’s Office headed in the same direction, the right direction, by providing the best possible service to the Citizens of Logan County. He and I have worked hand in hand on many of the issues that have faced the Sheriff’s Office in the past three years and he has played a vital role in the positive progress we have made as an Agency.
I will share more about why I believe he will continue what I’ve started once he makes his announcement.
It has been my honor to serve you and I will continue to give you 100% until my term expires at the end of next year!
I can’t tell you how much I love the people of Logan County and appreciate the support you have shown me and my team of dedicated public servants. May God bless you and may God continue to bless Logan County, Arkansas!
Sincerely,
Boyd D. Hicks
Logan County Sheriff
