A unique program exclusive to the Spiro campus of the Kiamichi Technology Center offers a flexible twist on the traditional 96-hour program that has been a long standing fixture of the Poteau campus.
“We’re are now offering a Certified Nurse Aide Flex-track program,” said Nina Morgan, adult coordinator for Kiamichi Technology.
Flex-track is an open-entry, competency-based program which allows students to work at their own pace with an individualized schedule.
“This program is ideal for students who are working, or need a more flexible schedule in order to complete the 96-hour course,” said Morgan. “Students can complete the program in as little as five weeks, or as long as three months.”
The traditional program consists of 12 eight-hour sessions before a student can be certified as a CNA. The Flex program covers the same information over the same number of hours, but is designed to allow students the flexibility to work at a pace that is designed to meet their personal schedule.
“We currently have a student in the program who works nights, so she may have to come fewer hours a day and it will take her a little longer,” said Morgan. “Other students may choose to do two days one week and three the next. They basically make their own schedule.”
Morgan says that the ease of getting the certification through such a flexible course that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time makes it a perfect opportunity for someone looking to start a new career.
While short time career programs like the CNA - Flex-track are not eligible for student loans or grants such as Pell grants, many students are funded through outside agencies which work closely with KTC.
“The Choctaw Nation pays for a lot of their citizens and Oklahoma Workforce has paid for students to go through our short-term programs,” said Morgan. “Some nursing homes and facilities will even pay for the program through sponsorship for their prospective employees.”
The cost for the program, with classroom instruction on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is $590 for the 96 hour course. The Spiro facility is located directly behind Spiro High school on West 3rd Street in Spiro.
