FAYETTEVILLE - Coach Bret Bielema says that his current situation at Arkansas is not a scenario that he has been involved in during his college football career. As fan frustration rises following Arkansas’ loss to Auburn on Saturday night, the first question in his postgame press conference was whether he thought he would still be the head football coach in 2018.
“Yeah. Obviously this is uncharted waters for me. I’ve never been in a situation when I was 2-5 and disappointed with where we are at.” Bielema said. “The greatest thing about a coaching position is that you just worry about the day in front of you. You get in there and go to work. I know we are close.”
Bielema says the hope in the rest of the season is taking things one day at a time.
“I think the hope is that everyone is going to do their job, starting with me. I don’t think that the outside world can figure the part out that whether you are 7-0 or 2-5 is that you work on is how to get better every day.” Bielema noted. “The hope is obviously you have kids with great character and kids that want to be successful.”
The head Hog says he knows his players are exposed to criticisms via social media and through contact with friends and family, but his coaches are focused on nothing but improvement.
“As coaches, your approach and your plan isn’t different whether you win or lose. It’s every minute of the day is poured into everything you can to make the preparation for next week.” Bielema said. “I don’t think you can be oblivious to it. I get it. I think our players especially know that. We don’t have a lot of seniors, but we have guys that have been in this situation before and weathered the storm. They are the ones that will control that locker room.”
The Hogs take on Ole Miss this Saturday.
