FORT SMITH - The 68 acres which was meant to be a sports complex for youth activities is now on the market. The City of Fort Smith confirmed this week that three separate parcels along Taylor Avenue in Chaffee Crossing would go with the deal.
Bids on the property are due on November 5th, as requirements and instructions have already been posted to the City of Fort Smith website in preparation for the sale process.
The land in question was a project that landed former State Senator Jake Files numerous federal charges after he and another Fort Smith businessman went into partnership to develop the land, which was to be youth baseball, softball, and soccer facilities. Files had sought general improvement funds for parts of the project that were later discovered to have been converted for personal gain.
Files has been released from an Oklahoma prison, and transitioned to a Central Arkansas halfway house earlier this month in preparation for a full release from federal custody.
