FORT SMITH - Charles Ray Vines, a Fort Smith resident who was convicted of murders in both Sebastian and Crawford Counties in the early 1990’s, has died in prison.
Arkansas Department of Corrections spokesperson Dina Tyler confirmed to InsideFortSmith.Com’s Ryan Merrill Thursday that Vines died last week of natural causes, while incarcerated in the state’s Maximum Security Unit southeast of Pine Bluff.
Vines was convicted for the rape and murder of Juanita Wofford of Fort Smith in 1993, and then Ruth Henderson of Crawford County in 1995. After the cases went unsolved for another five years, he was arrested after the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 2000. DNA collected from that case went on to link Vines to the other cases.
Officials had also considered him a potential suspect in other high profile River Valley cases, including the murder of Missy Witt, and the disappearance of Morgan Nick during the same time.
Vines was later the subject of the show Investigation Discovery in August 2017.
I worked with him at Denny’s Harley Davidson,we used to go riding motorcycles together, for what it was and what it is,he was the nicest, politest person you could ever meet, even the cops said so.but on another note good riddance.
