For both of you that were watching the Missouri-Georgia basketball game on the SEC Network earlier today, you probably got your money’s worth at the end of the first half.
After two players looked to be going after a rebound at the buzzer, a dust-up escalated between players for both teams. Then, out of nowhere, while trying to separate their respective players, two of the assistant coaches got into it. One of them happened to be Steve Shields, the Missouri assistant that was let go two years ago as head coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
You saw Georgia’s Mark Fox and Missouri’s Kim Anderson settle things down and shake hands, but there appears to be no love lost among their assistants.
It would appear when you watch that the Georgia assistant was pushing back on a Missouri player. Shields didn’t seem to like that, and taking the “no one disciplines my kid but me” approach, got after his adversary pretty hard.
This can’t be a good thing for Anderson, who came to Columbia from the Division II ranks after winning a national championship at Central Missouri. He is a Tiger alum, but Mizzou probably won’t settle for mediocrity too long, and embarrassing drama can sometimes add fuel to that fire.
(Arkansas has another coach named Anderson who has been given a heavy grace period with disappointing results, but ask us about that after Arkansas plays Kentucky tonight.)
Both teams were assessed technical fouls going into the second half. Georgia ended up winning the game 71-66.
