What did K-Mart sound like in December 1974?

This may be one of the most random posts you see all day, but it could come in handy if you are feeling nostalgic or want some old school instrumental holiday music to play in the background at work.

The music in the background of the video is the actual holiday reel that the K-Mart chain played over their intercom system, complete with in-store announcements from that era and everything.

Smoking in a shopping center in this day and age sounds absurd, right?

If you listen for a while you’ll hear announcements reminding you that smoking is only permitted in the snack bar.

Yes kids, through the 1970’s, 1980’s, and in some places even the 1990’s, both K-Mart and Wal-Mart had full-fledged snack bars. In some towns, it was the only place to get yourself an Icee.

If you listen to the whole thing, you’ll also hear an occasional announcement asking security to come to section three, or something of that nature. Back in that day, they would throw that out over the intercom, just in case at that moment, someone was about to stuff a cassette tape or toothpaste tube in the inside pocket of their dinner jacket.

For some of you, this might bring back some memories, but even if you weren’t around for that day and age, I think we can all agree that it was certainly a grand time in retail shopping that we will never see again.

Thanks to our buddy Drew Durigan, proprietor of the Cheapolife blog, for bringing this glorious two hours of listening enjoyment to our attention.

Happy Holidays!
