The most bizarre state championship ending goes to….

Video: Ben Creighton and Wess Moore of Fox 16, Nashville head coach Mike Volarvich and Bauxite head coach Daryl Patton call the game on Fidelity 6 Cable Television in Central Arkansas.

If you didn’t hear about the way the Class 4A State Championship ended at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock today, chances are you haven’t seen anything like this before.

Trailing Arkadelphia 28-27, the Warren Lumberjacks were driving toward the endzone, and were almost in field goal range. With three seconds on the clock, they were about to try to take the lead and win the state championship.

Then, for some inexplicable reason, one of their own 16-year-old fans decided to rush the field, only to be tackled by security and arrested by the Little Rock Police Department.

You would think the game would go on, right?

The officials then called an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Warren, sending them out of field goal range, and forcing them to go for it. And they failed. Arkadelphia intercepted the football and it was all over.

Arkadelphia came away with their first state championship since 1987, and Warren Head Coach Bo Hembree came away with some not so nice thoughts for the way it ended. Our friend Luke Matheson of ArkansasVarsity.Com got the reaction on video.

Matheson stated on Facebook Saturday night that he is awaiting clarification from the Arkansas Activities Association on the whether the interpretation of the rule was valid.
