FORT SMITH- The death of an inmate at the Sebastian County Detention Center reportedly took place over the weekend, according to Captain P Pevehouse with the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office.
“On March 9th, 2019 at around 4:45 AM, Adult Detention Staff found a 64 year old inmate having trouble breathing,” said Captain Pevehouse in a press release. “Detention personnel stated the inmate appeared to be labored in his breathing, lethargic and not responding to commands. EMS was called. The inmate was transported by EMS to Baptist Hospital Around 5:00 AM.”
The inmate reportedly passed away yesterday morning around midnight.
The Sebastian County Sheriffs Office has called upon the Arkansas State Police to conduct an investigation into the inmate’s death.
“SCSO investigators are simultaneously conducting an internal review of policies and procedures,” said Captain Pevehouse in a press release. “As the investigation is ongoing, SCSO will have no further comment at this time.”
Authorities are not releasing the identity of the inmate at this time as notification of next of kin is still pending.
