FORT SMITH - The National Weather Service says Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley could be dead center in an area that could see more severe weather as the day progresses. Forecasters placed much of the region under an enhanced threat for all modes of severe weather including the possibility of tornadoes.

“The threat for severe thunderstorms will continue through the day across a good portion of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas,” Meteorologists said earlier this morning. “The greatest threat should be along and south of Interstate 40, where an Enhanced Risk area exists. Very large hail, damaging winds, and flooding will be the greatest weather hazards today, but a low tornado threat will also exist.”

Parts of the Arkansas River Valley have already seen severe weather today, as an early morning tornado warning was issued for Logan County shortly before 6:00 AM. The Little Rock forecast office issued the warning after rotation was spotted on radar east of the Magazine community. Another tornado warning was issued for Yell and Pope Counties less than a half hour later.
