Former House Speaker Robbie Wills

CONWAY – Former state Speaker of the House Robbie Wills spent a lot of time in the chambers of the legislature, and still does from time to time. But lately, he has been spending a lot of time in the sky, as a private pilot.

Speaker Wills is also fond of sharing his experiences on Facebook. So when he took off from Cantrell Field in Conway for a morning flight on Wednesday, he saw something that immediately caught his eye in the Arkansas River. There below him, two replica ships heading west toward Fort Smith.

“It appears Christopher Columbus’ expedition got a little off course.” Wills joked with his followers online.

We at InsideFortSmith.Com checked in with him after his landing and he was happy to send his discovery our way.

As we reported in September, the ship replicas of the Nina and Pinta are scheduled to be in town for a week starting on Friday. They docked at Little Rock for several days last week.

The replicas of Niña and Pinta are traveling together around the U.S. to help people learn more about the voyage in 1492 that led to the discovery of what was called the New World.

General admission is $8.50 per person. Seniors above the age of 60 are $7.50 a person, while children between the ages of 5 and 16 are $6.00 per person. Children 4 and under are free.
