A Poteau city council member was charged with petit larceny on Tuesday stemming from an incident in which he allegedly stole petitions from a convenience store against a controversial youth program funded by the City of Poteau.

As reported last week on Inside Fort Smith, Winford ‘Wimpy’ Webb, who is one of two Ward 4 councilmen for the City of Poteau, was captured on videotape taking petitions from a Toke-A-Poke in Poteau shortly before the town council voted on a $2,500 stipend to Wolf Ridge Country Club of Wister to fund discounted golf for area youth.

The program was designed to allow area children and teens the opportunity to purchase discounted daily or monthly passes to the club’s golf course.with the country club providing equipment if needed.

The counts filed against Webb, a Poteau barber shop owner, are all misdemeanors. The City Council recently suspended the agreement due to a drop in attendance once the school year started and will revisit the issue and make a decision whether to renew the agreement in May 2018, according to published reports.
