FORT SMITH - Thousands gathered along the streets of downtown Fort Smith Saturday to take part in the city’s annual Christmas parade. The event coincided with a ceremony to lay wreaths on the headstone of each veteran buried at the Fort Smith National Cemetery.
“Today your Fort Smith Police Officers and Sebastian County Sheriffs Deputies attended the wreath-laying ceremony and Christmas parade.” the Fort Smith Police Department said via social media. “Chief Clark’s first Christmas parade in Fort Smith drew the largest group of participants and attendees in recent history. Sheriff Hollenbeck and Chief Clark walked the main section and were greeted by droves of smiling children and kindhearted residents. Merry Christmas Fort Smith!”
The Christmas Honors organization is made up of thousands of community volunteers from all over the region, who come together to transform the Fort Smith National Cemetery by placing one wreath on each of the thousands of headstones in honor of every man and woman’s service to our country.
