FORT SMITH - Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether the U.S. Marshal Museum project is worthy of a temporary tax increase in March. The special election was approved 6-1 by the Fort Smith Board of Directors at their meeting on Tuesday night.

Director George Catsavis was the dissenting vote.

The one percent sales tax increase would last nine months if approved, and the Museum has committed to paying the expenses associated with the special election.

To date, the Museum project has raised some $35.4 million in either monetary or in-kind donations including the land the project sits on. In documentation provided to the city, organizers of the effort say they’ll need S17.4 million to complete the project.
