FORT SMITH - As crowds descended on Chaffee Crossing for the annual Veterans’ Day Parade and festivities, one vet in particular had the benefit of something very special.
Harold Laird served in Vietnam, and some time after his return, lost his home to a fire. His Vietnam medals went up in smoke as well. Saturday, Fort Smith native and United States Senator John Boozman saw to it that Laird’s medals were restored.
“It’s not something that I dwell on,” Laird told Fox 24 Television. “Life is too short for that, but I’m just tickled to death that it happened today.”
The Senator told reporters that Laird’s actions cannot be forgotten.
“This is about ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things like him,” United States Senator John Boozman told the television station. “It is important for Mr. Laird, but it is also important for his family. We as a nation need to remember the sacrifice.”
