VAN BUREN - The Van Buren Police Department is taking the proper precautions as the Arkansas River has risen above flood stage. It is expected to rise to at least 31 feet by noon today, and then crest at a minimum of 33 feet on Friday.
“This is a very dangerous situation and we ask that citizens please stay away from flooded areas,” the Van Buren Police Department said in a statement. “The flood gates along the Arkansas River levee are being closed at this time. For your safety and the effective operation of the flood gates, only authorized personnel are permitted near the gates. As a reminder, anyone caught on the levee system can be arrested for criminal trespassing.”
As a result of the flooding, the following streets are closed:
•The road to Lee Creek Park in Downtown Van Buren
•Jefferson Street Bridge
•Rena Road between Pevehouse and Park Ridge Drive
The Department reminds residents not to drive around barricades.
