FAYETTEVILLE — Pat Gazzola, who bought and developed the legendary Catfish Hole restaurants in Alma and Fayetteville has passed away.

The longtime businessman was known as a passionate supporter of Arkansas Razorback athletics.

Gazzola was successful in a number of ventures prior to buying the restaurants some 20 years ago, having become an attorney out of college.

He would later leave his law practice to create Petroleum Landman Services, which served the oil and gas industry for 24 years.

In 1993, Gazzola bought the Catfish Hole located in small building north of Alma along U.S. Highway 71.

One year later, they built the Fayetteville location along Wedington Drive, which became an instant success. In 2007, the Alma location moved from the smaller restaurant to their current location along Collum Drive.

“I am a pretty simple guy,” Gazzola said in a biography on his restaurant’s website. “Outside of spending time with my customers at the restaurants, I truly enjoy Razorback sports and chatting with other Hog fans.”

He also was up front that his industry was not always the easiest.

“The restaurant business is a tough business, but we have a simple formula … Great food + Great service = Success! Our customers come to the Catfish Hole with an expectation to get fresh high-quality food and exceptional service every experience,” Gazzola said. “If we are not on our game, they definitely let us know. We may not get everything right every time, but we will never sacrifice food quality or service… It is our lifeline. Our team separates us from the rest.”

The restaurants are known for their catfish and chicken offerings, but one of the staples of their history has been their unique hushpuppies, which they serve as a free appetizer to customers prior to their meal.

Funeral services are pending.
