FORT SMITH - The National Weather Service says that the heat index could be dangerously high today. Concurrently, a Heat Advisory has been issued for most of the area all day.
“Hot and humid weather is expected today, with afternoon heat index values ranging from 98 to 107 degrees,” the Tulsa forecast office said. “A heat advisory has been issued for parts of eastern Oklahoma and west central Arkansas from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM today.”
Residents are urged to stay hydrated and to check on elderly neighbors as the temperatures are on the rise.
Heading into the weekend, the Weather Service says storms could be back in the forecast for much of the region.
“Thunderstorm chances will increase markedly late Saturday, and especially Saturday night and Sunday, as a slow moving frontal boundary and associated upper level storm system approach the area,” Forecasters said. “Severe weather and heavy rainfall will both be a concern, and the heavy rainfall may result in renewed flooding concerns in some places.”
