FORT SMITH - Fort Smith Police Chief Nathaniel Clark honored two key members of his force Tuesday night at the regular meeting of the city Board of Directors.

On November 8th, 2017, Fort Smith Police Officers were called to a possible suicidal
person. Corporal Cody Elliot and Officer Keith Shelby with the Department’s K-9 Unit
were the first to arrive.

The two officers located a vehicle covered with a tarp in the back yard of the residence.
Officers immediately noticed that the car windows were fogged up and that a hose was
affixed to the exhaust of the vehicle. The hose was connected to the interior and the
windows of the vehicle were taped shut. A male victim was discovered in the driver’s seat,
unresponsive.

Officer Keith Shelby was able to gain entry through the passenger side of the vehicle.

Officer Shelby and Corporal Cody Elliot were able to remove the victim from danger and
immediately took him to a nearby ambulance that had arrived on the scene, ultimately
saving the victim’s life.
