FORT SMITH – City directors will decide tonight whether to turn off the parking meters in downtown Fort Smith for the second year in a row during the Christmas holiday season.
City Administrator Carl Geffken said in a memo to the Board of Directors last week that the action had lost the city a “modest $4,000”, which could easily be replaced by the city’s fund balance.
Geffken noted that he feels waiving the parking fees will help make downtown Fort Smith more attractive to shoppers, and encourage the Chamber of Commerce’s “Shop Local” campaign.
Capital Improvement Plans
The Board will take up a resolution implementing the city’s five year Capital Improvement Plan. The projects are funded by a 1/8th cent sales and use tax approved by voters in 2012. Some of the highlights of the project include items like a new splash pad at Creekmore Park, a dog park, the Martin Luther King skate park, and a $500,000 investment in the Parrot Island Water Park.
The plan in its entirety can be reviewed in this month’s city board agenda at www.fortsmithar.gov.
The Board of Directors will meet at 7:00 PM at the Fort Smith Public Schools Service Center.
