A Fort Smith patrol officer was presented with a Certificate of Excellence by Fort Smith Police Chief Nathanial Clark on Tuesday for his “exemplary work performance and willingness to go the extra mile in the delivery of quality law enforcement services” for his actions that occurred in an incident on June 14.
Cpl. Chris McCoy was leaving his residence to report for duty when he noticed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants parked on Bryn Mawr.
McCoy drove by the vehicle and noticed a an individual quickly jump into the backseat.
McCoy turned his vehicle around to check the situation out further and the suspect vehicle left the area. McCoy notified an on-duty officer patrolling the area and both officers searched for the suspicious vehicle.
The vehicle was eventually located on Glen Flora Way and officers initiated a traffic stop. When the suspect vehicle pulled into the driveway of a vacant house, two of the occupants fled on foot.
The driver was arrested and one of the other juveniles was located hiding in the nearby woods. The third suspect, also a juvenile, got away but has been identified.
The pair that were arrested have been charged with one count of breaking and entering to a vehicle, fleeing and a curfew violation. The incident is still under investigation and officials anticipate addition charges will be filed on breaking and entering once the investigation has been completed.
