FORT SMITH - The National Weather Service has begun to show receding waters along the Arkansas River, as the latest levels show signs that dangerous flooding could be on its’ way out.
As of Sunday morning, the water level at the Fort Smith-Van Buren gauge was at 39.1 feet, which was lower than Saturday’s record level of 40.79 feet. The original record had been set in April 1945 at 38.10 feet.
The river levels are still considered dangerous, as major flood stage is considered to be 31 feet and above.
