FORT SMITH - A man who stopped his car and threatened to jump from the Garrison Avenue bridge Wednesday was saved by emergency service workers who intervened in the situation.

Sergeant Wendell Sampson of the Fort Smith Police Department said in a statement that the man had been traveling toward Fort Smith from Sequoyah County when he stopped his Honda Civic just short of the Arkansas state line. He then reportedly began threatening to jump into the Arkansas River.

“The male in his twenties was crying and yelling in Spanish while being restrained and was handcuffed and held in leg restraints until EMS arrived.” Sampson said. “The suspect was released into the custody of the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department.”

Sampson said a Fort Smith Police Department officer suffered a broken arm as he and other officers struggled with the suspect.
