FORT SMITH - The City of Fort Smith Utility Department has begun distributing the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Permits and giving on-site training to local businesses within the City. The City’s FOG Program was established by Ordinance 89-16, to ensure protection of public health and the environment, and to prevent damage to the City’s public sewer system.
In March 2017, the Utility Department conducted four public meetings to provide program and ordinance education to local businesses. Also, the Utility Department sent Fight the FOG flyers to residents of the City for public awareness and provide education to help prevent FOG from entering the sewer system. Education and public awareness for the FOG Program will continue into 2018.
This program is designed to provide local businesses with the proper tools and knowledge to prevent sanitary sewer pipe blockages that cause backups and sanitary sewer overflows. More information on the Fog Program can be found on our website at https://fortsmithwater.org/fog/.
