Two-car collision in Scott County leaves one dead, one injured Saturday

A 42 year-old Waldron woman died Saturday afternoon in a head on collision on U.S. Hwy. 71 North in Scott County.

A 41-year-old Waldron woman died Saturday afternoon in a head on collision on U.S. Hwy. 71 North in Scott County.

Stacy A. Byers was southbound on a rural stretch of Hwy. 71 when the 1995 Chevy Corsica she was driving collided with a 2004 Toyota Tundra driven by Larry D. Epperson of Rogers.

According to the Arkansas State Police preliminary report both vehicles were attempting to negotiate a curve and the Byers vehicle drifted left before the impact The force of the collision knocked the Corsica in the east ditch while the Toyota went into the west ditch.

Byers was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County County coroner Sam Callahan at 2:29 p.m. Epperson was transported to Mercy Medical in Fort Smith for treatment for his injuries.

The Northwest Scott Volunteer Fire Department responded to the wreck but according to one source the effort to give the victim from the vehicle was delayed due to the fact that someone recently stole the department’s “Jaws of Life” equipment.

Officials said the extended rescue efforts was not a contributing factor in the death of Byers.
