Arkansas legislator in ICU following heart attack

Sen. John Cooper (R-Jonesboro)

State Senator John Cooper of Jonesboro remains in intensive care today after suffering a heart attack. Cooper’s family posted on Facebook that he had the episode following a hip replacement surgery earlier this week.

“He is doing much better but recovery will be slow.” his wife Sue Cooper posted via his Facebook page. “Please continue to pray for us. We know God is the great physician and will take care of us.”

The Republican has served in the Arkansas State Senate since January 2014, when he won a special election. The race was called to fill the position of former Senator Paul Bookout, who resigned amid a criminal investigation into mail fraud charges. He was sentenced to eighteen months in federal prison last year.

Prior to serving in the legislature, Cooper retired from a distinguished career at AT&T.
