FORT SMITH - As the flood waters begin to recede, area law enforcement is preparing to re-open roads that were closed to the public. One of the hardest hit communities were road closings are concerned is the city of Lavaca, who took to social media Sunday to remind residents that getting the highways back to normal may come with some complications.
“Hopefully in a few days we can start using Highway 22 again,” the Lavaca Police Department noted. “Please remember that once the water is off of the roadways you should still use caution. There is going to be debris and possible mud along the areas that has been flooded. This could create some slick spots and road hazards.”
Highway 96 has been re-opened from Lavaca to Highway 22 since Thursday, however the road is down to one lane near South River Road. An eleven mile stretch of the same highway east of Lavaca remains closed, as does Highway 255 between Lavaca and Central City.
Other state highways that remain closed include:
- Highway 22 between Barling and Highway 96 (Budweiser beer can)
- Rogers Avenue at Meandering Way
- Wheeler Avenue (Highway 255) between I Street and Fresno Avenue
- Riverfront Drive (Highway 255) between downtown Fort Smith and Midland Boulevard
