John B. Hobbs, 88, Arbuckle Island

John B. Hobbs, who resided in the community of Arbuckle Island, north of Lavaca, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at his home.

He was born Sept. 10, 1928, at Arbuckle Island, to the late Isaac William and Lynn Thurman Hobbs. He was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy D. Hobbs; five brothers and two sisters.

John B. married Sue Carol Johnson and raised a family together. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from February, 1951 until honorably discharged in September of 1956.

He was an iron worker by trade and was owner and operator of Hobbs Ornamental Iron & Steel Corporation in Lavaca from 1968 until he retired at the age of 75.

John B. was competitive by nature and loved playing golf and cards with his friends at Deer Trails Country Club. His friends will tell you he was a fierce competitor and enjoyed telling the stories of his victories.

He took pride in watching his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren compete as Lavaca Golden Arrows and on into college. John B. loved his family, his friends and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

He was a gentleman, a hard working honest businessman, and a Christian. He assured his family and closest friends that he had a relationship with the Lord and would meet them in Heavener.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sue (Johnson) Hobbs; three sons, Johnny Hobbs and wife Debbie, Kenny Hobbs and wife Rayda, all of Lavaca and Tommy Hobbs and wife Lisa of La Salle, Illinois; five grandchildren, Shawn Hobbs and wife Cristi, Dana Clunn, Lance Hobbs and wife Jennifer, all of Lavaca, Bradley Hobbs of Houston, Texas and Mindy Hobbs-Jayo and husband Ryan of Ridgecrest, California; nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alex and Aubree Hobbs, Jac and Abby Clunn, Ella Hobbs, Iris and Tommy Jayo and Harleigh Hobbs; as well as numerous extended family that he loved dearly.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Hobbs, Bradley Hobbs, Lance Hobbs, Ike Hobbs, Richard Hobbs and Tommy Smothers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Tidwell, Tommy McMurry and members of Deer Trails Country Club.
