Suspicious death investigation evolves into homicide, suspect arrested

FORT SMITH- Police announced over the weekend that a suspect has been arrested and a victim has been identified after an investigation into a suspicious death last Thursday evening evolved into a homicide investigation.

Police were dispatched to the area of North 12th and G. Street after they received reports of a possible deceased subject. Upon arrival, the body of a male victim was located inside and investigators were able to gather several witnesses at the scene.

“A suspect, 38-year-old Christopher Duren, was developed and during the course of the investigation, was arrested for first-degree murder and taken to the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center,” stated Aric Mitchell, Public Information Officer with the Fort Smith Police Department.

Police have also been able to positively identify the victim in the incident as 47-year-old Eric Reed.

“The investigation will continue, but no other suspects are being sought in connection to the homicide at this time,” stated Mitchell.

No other details have been released by FSPD on the incident at this time. We will provide more updates as they become available.
