The Fort Smith Police Department celebrated a historic first yesterday as the department welcomed their first ever female Chief of Police.

Mimi Glidewell of Glidwell Distributing, a longtime resident of Fort Smith, was sworn in as “Chief for a Day” by Mayor George McGill during a ceremony held yesterday morning at the Fort Smith Police Department.

“Glidewell has supported the FSPD for several years, contributing a number of artwork pieces to this agency and always having a supportive word for the men and women in Blue.”, said Public Information Officer Aric Mitchell in a press release.

The “Chief for a Day” program was initiated by Chief Nathaniel Clark in 2017 to recognize accomplished young people who are contributing to the community.
