FORT SMITH - The meter technicians who collect coins from local parking meters see a lot of different currency. Monday however, technician Jon Raspberry had quite the surprise when he found that someone had paid for their parking with a number of antique coins.

” Someone paid using a slew of old Buffalo and Liberty Head nickels,” the Fort Smith Police Department said on social media. “The Buffaloes ceased production in 1938 and actually replaced the Liberty Heads, which ended with a small run in 1913. The oldest coin from today’s haul goes back to 1902.”

The Department said that believe it or not, you can still use those coins in a working parking meter and pay with no problems.
