FORT SMITH - The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for most of the region today, as triple digit temperatures continue to roast the area in an unrelenting fashion.
“Afternoon heat index values will once again reach 100 to 108 degrees across most of eastern Oklahoma as well as the Arkansas River Valley of west central Arkansas.” Meteorologists said on Friday. “A Heat Advisory is in effect for these areas from noon to 8 pm. Take appropriate heat precautions to prevent heat illnesses.”
Forecasters remind residents of the affected areas that overheating is a serious issue.
“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.” the Weather Service said. “When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.”
Forecasters say that afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible over the weekend and into the first part of next week.
