FORT SMITH- An early voting period will begin today in the special election to determine weather a temporary sales tax should be levied in the city.
The one-time, non-renewable, nine-month one penny on the dollar sales tax increase that would help generate an estimated $15-16 million dollars in tax revenues which would be used to finish the remainder of the United States Marshals Museum project.
If the tax is approved the increase will run from July 1st, 2019 - March 31st, 2020.
Early voting will take place at the Sebastian County Courthouse from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM and will run through Friday March 11th, 2019.
Fort Smith Mayor George McGill spoke in support of the sales tax increase on Facebook.
“Voting YES will tell investors and donors far-and-wide that the mighty Arkansas Riverfront is open for business and will be home to a world-class attraction,” said McGill in a recent Facebook post. ” Communities that invest in themselves thrive, prosper, and grow. Communities that refuse to accept this reality whither, decay, and, ultimately, fail.”
The official election day for the proposed increase is set for March 12th, 2019.
